The Abacus is a line counting software program for medical (and other) transcriptionists using MS Word, versions 97/2000/2002(XP)/2003/2007. Abacus will count the lines in your documents, record the line counts in a log file, and create an invoice which you can then use to bill your clients or reconcile with your employer.
We currently offer two different versions of the Abacus. Although both programs count lines in your MS Word documents, they work in very different ways. Due to the way that Word 2003 and Word 2007 handle add-in programs and macros (like The Abacus, version 3.0), we recommend using Abacus SE with these newer versions of MS Word. You can use version 3.0 but extensive macro configuration of MS Word is necessary in order to enable The Abacus to work with Word 2003 and 2007. Specific instructions can be found in the Abacus FAQ.

The Abacus, version 3.0
An MS Word add-in program
This version of the Abacus is a Word add-in file, like a large macro. The program is installed with Word so that it starts when Word starts, and is unloaded from computer memory when you close Word.
The Abacus (version 3.0) operates from within Word and
is integrated more tightly with Word. It runs on any 32 bit version of Windows and works with Word 97 through 2002.

Abacus SE
A standalone counting program
Abacus SE is a Standalone Executable program. It is not a macro or Word add-in, but requires that you have MS Word installed on your computer as it opens and close Word to perform its work.
Abacus SE operates independently of Word
and for many users is easier to install and operate than v 3.0. It works with any 32 bit version of Windows and with Word 97 through 2007.
