Tutorial: How to install and start the Abacus (MS Word add-in version 3.0) for MS Word 97-2002. 1. Download the Abacus installation program from our web site at: http://www.theabacus.biz/abacus30exe.zip 2. After the file downloads to your computer, double click on it to unzip it, then double click again to start it (or "Open" it); and click on the "Copy Files" button. The Abacus files will be copied to their correct locations and an Abacus folder will be created ("C:\Abacus"). 3. After the installation program runs, you should get a message telling you that either: a) the installation was successful, or b) the installation was not successful, what went wrong, and what to do. 4. Now, to start Abacus you must first start MS Word. This version of Abacus is a Word add-in program. This means that you start Abacus from inside Word, somewhat like running a Word macro. So next, start Word. (If Word is already open, close it and then reopen it.) 5. After MS Word starts and is open on your computer screen in front of you, press the Abacus shortcut keys, "Ctrl-Shift-A", all at the same time, to start Abacus. If this fails to work, go to the Word menu bar and click on "Tools- >Macro->Macros" to open the Macros screen. Locate the macro "AbacusCountLines" (in the large "Macro name" box) and double click on it. If you don't see the macro "AbacusCountLines", go to step 6. Otherwise, go to step 7. [6. Use this if Step 5 failed. Close the Macros screen. On the Word menu bar, click on "Tools->Templates and Add-ins". In the box entitled "Global templates and add-ins" you should see a checkbox that says "Abacus.dot". If it is unchecked, check it. Then click on the OK button, close and reopen Word, and try to start Abacus again as described in step 5. If you don't see the file "Abacus.dot" listed, click on the "Add" button. Navigate to the directory where the "Abacus.dot" file is to be found, then click on it to add it and make it appear in the "Global templates and add-ins" screen. Usually this file is in the "c:\program files\microsoft office\office\startup" directory.] 7. When Abacus first starts it will ask you if you want to create an order form. If you haven't yet purchased an unlock code and wish to do so, you can click on "Yes" to prepare an order form. If you already have your unlock code, or just want to try Abacus, click on the "No" button. The next screen is the Quick Help screen. Please review it, and then click on "OK". 8. Next you will see the Abacus main screen. On the bottom of this screen you will see the copyright message: Copyright 1999-2009, Abacus Medical Systems If you have an unlock code, click on the copyright message and enter your unlock code in the next screen. You should now be ready to rock and roll. Or at least to count lines. - Bill bill@theabacus.biz Abacus Medical Systems http://www.theabacus.biz/theAbacus.htm
